- Red Wing is a small city (population ~16,500) in Goodhue County, southeastern Minnesota, located on a bend of the **Mississippi River**.
- It has deep Native American roots — named after the Dakota chief **Tatankamani**, also called “Red Wing.” 
- Historically, it was a major **wheat shipping** center in the 1800s.
- Red Wing is known for its manufacturing: **Red Wing Shoes**, **stoneware pottery**, and other industries remain important. 
- The city has scenic natural features, especially **Barn Bluff (He Mni Can)**, a bluff overlooking the Mississippi which is culturally significant.
- It’s also a cultural hub: home to the historic **Sheldon Theatre** (built 1904) and a charming downtown with historic architecture. 
- There are strong outdoor recreation opportunities: hiking, river cruises, and parks along the river.
